Ugandan rapper Fik Fameica has rated his solo projects highly over collaborations, saying he earns less money when he works with fellow artists.
Fik Fameica, real name Walukagga Shafic, is one of the few rappers in the industry who has had a chance to collaborate with prominent artists across the continent. His music appeals to youths, making him a target for artists who want to team up with him.
During a YouTube interview, Fik Fameica confessed that despite the many collaborations under his name, despite them being hit songs, he has not earned a lot from them. This is because most artists he works with own the rights to these songs and, therefore, are entitled to all the royalties.
Fik Fameica said they first agreed on who would own the song before he hit the studio with any artist. If the other party takes it, they will finance the most significant percentage of the costs needed to make the project successful.

“Collaborations are usually shared or in some instances, the other party invests in money and gets all the royalties. We sit down and agree on who wants to own the song or it is a shared project. If you take it, it means you will have to invest in the money and own it because it is yours to earn from it,” he said.

Unlike other artists (especially the stars) who abandon the song altogether and leave the other party to struggle, Fik Fameica emphasised that he would actively promote the project. Even with the collective effort, he will have it at the back of his mind that he will not be earning from it.
