Singer and songwriter Laika Music has revealed that she is doing music for money and not for fun like other musicians.
In different interviews, Laika Music has revealed that she launched her music career by doing song covers for international artists like Alaine, and Lauryn Hill which she posted on social media. This officially introduced her to the music industry forcing her to release her own songs, hence bagging a growing fan base.
“I came for money and I’m still looking for it. That is what I want, I’m not doing this for fun. I know I can sing, I’m very confident and I have fans who love and can die for me,” she said.
Despite having several songs under her belt, Laika Music took a long time without getting her breakthrough. She dismisses claims that she is using her body to get the attention of music lovers instead of her talent.
“I’m very patient because that is what music is like. You always have to push until you get a breakthrough one day and start earning money. I’m very talented and whoever says otherwise is sent from the devil. I have been singing my whole life and all the people I have worked with know that when I start singing live, I’m talented,” she said.
Laika is one of the few new artists who have had challenges settling with the same management for a reasonable amount of time. Many have accused her of being ill-mannered and intolerable when it comes to relating with people, the allegations that she strongly dismisses.
“This is not true. I’m just a straightforward person who hates lying. If I’m to tell you something, I do it straight forward,” she said.
In April last year, Laika Music signed with Ray Pan Promotions, one of the fast-rising music managers in town, releasing several songs like Love Song among others before parting ways.
“I left because we are different people; he had his own path and I had my own. We had different misunderstandings and it is okay. We still talk though, he is my friend and I wish him the best,” she said.
Laika Music is trending for her hit song ‘Ontabula’, a collaboration with rapper Fik Fameica that was released two weeks ago. The high-budget video was shot in Dar-es-salaam and Laika footed the entire bill for the production.
If you are a young artist and you are working with a bigger artist, you won’t find them helping you. Unless someone does it out of their own kindness comes up to help with money and promotion. They do not spend because they have made it. If I own the song, I will carter for the 80% because here we do not have split sheets or sharing copyrights. Since they are giving you publicity, you pay for everything,” she said.
Laika Music has so far released two collaborations because she says she wants people to appreciate her as a person not because she teams up with other artists.
