The current Katikiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga is bitter with Ugandans who present politicians’ portraits to their inlaws during the customary ceremonies.
Owek. Mayiga’s comments come following the growing trend among Ugandans of including prominent politicians’ portraits in the collection of images that are presented to their inlaws during introduction ceremonies among other customary festivities.
This came off as offensive to Katikiro Peter Mayiga who publicly condemned it, noting that politics was not to be mixed with traditions.
It is not acceptable to take politicians’ portraits to your in-laws during a traditional introduction ceremony. Let me give an example of staunch Catholics, do you mean they go with the Pope’s photo to their in-laws? That is not the place for it. We ought to know what things to do and where. It is a cultural ceremony, there is no way you can bring a political figure into this,” he cautioned.
Katikiro further advised the masses to always honor their in-laws with cultural gifts as a sign of respect and preservation of their cultural norms.

“If it is an introduction ceremony, we honor the in-laws with cultural gifts. There are also gifts that are being used these days; things like the Kabaka’s portrait, the map of Buganda Kingdom, Nabaggereka’s photo, your totem and the certificate,” Katikiro concluded as he called upon all cultural leaders to words toward rescuing and protecting the cultural norms especially at such ceremonies.
