Moses Matovu shares the inspiration that led to Afrigo Band formation

Legendary musician Matovu Moses, one of the founding members of the Afrigo Band, has opened up about his journey that led to the creation of Uganda’s longest-standing band.

Moses was raised by his mother in Bakuli, a Kampala suburb. He revealed that his love of music runs deep in his bloodline, particularly from his mother’s family.

His early education began at Namirembe Primary School before he moved to Kibuli, where he changed schools. Moses says he was naturally a sporty child, but his love for music was always there.

During his time in Kibuli, he decided to take his music more seriously, and that’s when he met Abdu Kintu, a fellow music lover who performed professionally in nightclubs.

Abdu introduced Moses to the nightlife music scene, taking him to clubs where he met and sang with members of the band The Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds quickly noticed his talent and invited him to perform alongside them occasionally.

Subsequently, Moses crossed paths with The Cranes Band, where he began playing the ‘Konga’. Shortly after, he started performing with them after liking his musical experience and energy.

Moses’s journey setbacks.

While in Senior 3, his father suffered an accident that left him unable to pay school fees for him and his two sisters. He had to acquire bursaries for them, but they were discontinued due to the political instability and wars at the time.

Moses Matovu then stopped his education and joined ‘The Cranes Band’ full-time. The band worked together for several years but eventually broke up due to management issues.

The legendary singer and other band members tried to get the band back together, but they still didn’t last.

Moses was inspired to start his new band. However, they didn’t have their equipment and instruments, and they didn’t have the finances or connections to buy new equipment. After struggling, they finally got their equipment; the only thing left was to get a name for their new band. They came up with the name ‘Afrigo Band’.

Since then, they’ve been tied to Ugandan music excellence for decades, he revealed during the Tusker Malt Conversations.
