Mun G reveals the challenges faced by Uganda’s hip-hop scene and why it hasn’t thrived

Luga Flow rapper, Mun G, one of the long-standing members of the hip-hop industry has opened up on the challenges faced by young rappers trying to make it in the hip-hop industry and the genre as a whole, acknowledging that they are still struggling to thrive.

Mun G, real name Mungi Emmanuel Matovu, tagged the decline of the popularity of the genre on music fans’ consistent love for love music.

Typical of music lovers in Uganda, they have a strong affection for love songs which has successfully taken over the scene and appeals to both the women and the youths in general.

The ‘With You’ rapper also noted that the hardcore nature of hip-hop makes it less appealing especially to women, who tend to prefer softer genres.

This makes it difficult for any hip-hop artist to succeed in the industry without the support of female fans. He advised fellow rappers to try and adjust to a sound more appealing to the women; something they relate to and easily understand.

People love listening to artists singing about love; just naturally. The known truth is Ugandans are so engrossed in love music or music that appeals more to the youths and women. It is very hard for you to be successful in the music industry without having female fans and we should agree that we do not have many of them loving HipHop.

You have to find a way to make it more appealing to them because hip-hop is meant to be poetry. But when you release confusing music, women do not want to decipher so much and you find yourself alone,” Mun G revealed.
