Ragga Dee Explains 15-Year Hiatus from Concerts

Veteran singer Ragga Dee, real name Dan Kazibwe has explained that the reason as to why it took him 15 years to stage another concert was because he felt as musicians, they were not making money anymore from their art.

The singer who last staged a solo concert in the 2000s revealed that while he was at the peak of his career then, rich businessmen around town would buy their music albums for a huge sum of money and end up reselling/ distributing them to the final consumers. This helped them generate money from their craft.

Unlike then, in the era of smartphones, music lovers can now easily access their songs for free and download them on their devices without paying a single coin.

This is because the copyright law had not been put in place but now that it has been signed and endorsed by the cabinet, Ragga Dee believes they will start getting their royalties like they deserve.

According to Ragga Dee, the bill will soon be tabled before parliament.

“The reason as to why I refused to stage a show was because we were singing for free. Those days, people like Kasiwukira used to buy an entire album for Ugx. 100 million, and sell it to the rest of the people. But lately, you do music for free because people keep downloading it on their phones for free.

So, I sat down and thought about how we could sort this, that is why we are fighting for the copyright and we are glad it was signed on by the cabinet. It will be presented before the parliament so that the law comes into place. If you have my music whether in Uganda or out, all the royalties come to me,” Ragga Dee said.
