Weekend European Football is back; Here is Premier League, La Liga and Serie A preview

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to extended action from the Premier LeagueLa Liga  and Serie A, with matches scheduled to run from Friday 19 to Monday 22 November 2021.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The top clash from this weekend’s Premier League action sees Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield for a rivalry which has traditionally been one of the most entertaining anywhere in Europe.

And while the Reds continue to look one of the top teams in England, the Gunners have recovered from their awful start to the season and manager Mikel Arteta will see this clash as a good litmus test by which to judge his team’s progress.

“When you play against the team that is going to be up there obviously it’s great when you’re able to beat them. It’s another game, we are on a good run and we have to continue to do so. We will have to improve,” said Arteta.

Another mouthwatering clash, and one which opens the round’s action early on Saturday afternoon, has Leicester City hosting Chelsea at the King Power Stadium. The Blues are definite title contenders, while the Foxes have struggled to find consistency.

“It’s concentration. We’ve got a young squad who are developing at the level. They are playing European football, they are playing lots of games, and you have to be on it every single game, you can’t be giving teams a two-goal start,” said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers on his team’s propensity for slow starts.

Elsewhere this weekend in the Premier League, Watford will hope for home inspiration at Vicarage Road for the visit of Manchester United, while Everton and Rafa Benitez will hope to outsmart Manchester City when the teams meet at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Later the same day, the round will be wrapped up by a clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United – two teams which are certainly under-performing in the 2021-22 season and will be desperate to claim all three points in their clash in North London.

SuperSport is also the only place to get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the top match for this round is the ‘Derbi Barceloni’ between FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol at the Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana are still finding their feet after a tumultuous few months this season – which has included the dismissal of Ronald Koeman from the manager’s post – but veteran Gerard Pique knows that a local derby will be highly motivating on both sides.

“It is a game of great emotion and determination for both clubs,” said the centre-back. “We always want to get the better of Espanyol and to give our fans a reason to be proud out on the streets. We have been in a difficult moment this season, but all we can do is make sure we are fully focused and prepared for the 90 minutes on the pitch.”

Elsewhere, Real Madrid will look to avoid a banana skin when they head to Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes to take on Granada. Los Blancos have put themselves very much in the conversation for title winners, and in Vinicius Junior they have a player who is finally living up to his billing as one of the most exciting attackers in European football.

“I’m really happy with what I have been doing since the start of the campaign,” the Brazilian explained. “I just want to continue in this vein until the end of the season. [Manager Carlo] Ancelotti gives us lots of confidence. I keep working hard and keep listening to those around me. It’s important to have confidence.”

Other key games to watch from Spain include Sevilla hosting Alaves, Atletico Madrid taking on Osasuna in the capital city and Real Sociedad welcoming Valencia – with all three respective home teams chasing three points to keep up the pressure at or near the top of the log.

The key match from Serie A this weekend arrives on the evening of Sunday 21 November and sees reigning champions Internazionale host one of the teams looking most likely to claim their crown, Napoli.

The Neapolitans have emerged as one of Italy’s best teams this season, powered by the goal-scoring prowess of Nigerian Victor Osimhen and Luciano Spalletti’s tactical acumen, but the Nerazzurri are not to be underestimated – especially on home soil.

“The season is long and anything can still happen,” said Nicolo Barella in regards to his team’s hopes of successfully defending the Scudetto. “We must fight hard and make sure we are near the top of the log heading into the final weeks… but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us before then.”

Another tasty clash in this round’s menu sees Lazio at home to Juventus. Le Aquile have been one of the most entertaining teams on offer in Serie A this season, scoring and conceding plenty of goals as they try to find some semblance of consistency, and a win over Juve could be the perfect spark for them to go to another level.

Elsewhere, AC Milan will have a tricky trip to the Stadio Artemio Franchi to take on Fiorentina. La Viola look like they will be a mid-table team this season, but they feature a potential world-class talent in striker Dusan Vlahovic, who has been linked with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for the impending January transfer window.

Also keep an eye out for Atalanta’s home clash against Spezia and Genoa looking to upset Jose Mourinho’s Roma at Stadio Communale Luigi Ferraris, with the Rossoblu in need of points to lift themselves away from the lower reaches of the log table.
