Today, 31 March 2025, UMEME has handed over to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) after two decades of serving Ugandans.
Following UMEME’s departure, the Ministry of Energy and Minierals Development has unveiled “UEDCL Light” as the new name replacing MEME’s ”Yaka.” The announcement highlighted that Yaka rebrands to Light to signify a new era in energy distribution.
The Energy Minister, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, revealed that effective tomorrow, April 1st, 2025, “UEDCL Light” will be available on telecom menus when purchasing electricity, urging Ugandans to follow the updated procedures to access electricity services without disruption.
The UEDCL managing director, Mr. Paul Mwesigwa, assured Ugandans that UEDCL is committed to business continuity, uninterrupted service delivery, and the efficient management of the country’s electricity distribution network following the end of Umeme’s tenure.

The UEDCL Light rebrand, however, has generated a debate on social media, with netizens claiming it appears unfamiliar in comparison to the previous Yaka name.
