Renowned Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei bags a gold medal in the World Olympic Games.
Cheptegei culminated the race at the purple track of Stade de France in a jaw-dropping Olympic record time of 26:43.14 dethroning Selemon Barega.
The gold medal marks Uganda’s first achievement at this year’s Olympics. In the race, Cheptegei surpassed Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi who won a silver medal, with a finish time of 26:43.44.
United States of America’s Grant Fisher ended up with Bronze after finishing just behind in 26:43.46.
Despite defending champion Selemon Barega taking the lead in the opening first three minutes, the reigning record holder managed to emerge with a scorching pace in the final 600 meters of the 25-lap racetrap.
