Phina Mugerwa has opened up about the most challenging period in her life – when her ex-husband and father to her son, Ken Muyisa dated her fellow musician, Cindy Sanyu.
She described it as the worst time of her life, a situation that caused immense damage to her and her child, Sandton.
Phina Mugerwa was madly in love with Ken, a South African-based Ugandan football player who was known for his lavish lifestyle. The couple had a long-distance relationship for close to five years until 2013 when they broke up after Ken ditched Phina for Cindy. The couple’s son, Sandton, was 3 years old at that time.
Cindy made headlines when she introduced Ken to her parents’ home in Muyenga, something that completely shattered Phina Mugerwa because she claimed she did not see it coming. However, the union did not last long as they broke up the following year. Cindy allegedly kicked Muyiisa out of her house because he had gone broke, turning her into the breadwinner.
“I was the topic on social media, I would pass on the streets and see my name in newspapers. It is the biggest problem that has ever happened in my life. I was so stressed but they told me the biggest answer was in me, no one else would help me. This pushed me to be so hardworking and I was transformed because of the situation. I learned my lessons and moved on,” she narrated.
The estranged couple’s son, Sandton seeing his mother cry over the years due to the heartbreak greatly affected him emotionally.
“It affected him emotionally even at school. The headmistress called and told me he was tortured. He was going through a lot and I had to get his grandfather to talk to him. They also told me to stop crying in front of him and stop showing him what I was going through,” she said.
Despite the disappointment, Phina Mugerwa reveals that the incident was a blessing in disguise because she made a lot of friends with important people in the country, who always called to check in on her and also share their experiences as motivation to help her heal.
“Amelia Kyambadde was there for me up to this moment, she became a mother. Capt. Mike Mukulaa told me to cry in private and always look good in public. I didn’t turn back. they became my friends and closely monitored me to find out how I was doing and where I was,” she said.
Phina Mugerwa may have been hurt to the core but she never lashed out at Cindy and Ken. She kept her beef with Cindy until they met in the Uganda Musicians Association where Sophie Gombya was the president and Ykee Benda was her Vice president.
She resigned to pursue her political career, automatically outing Ykee as the president. As a committee, they started looking around for the new vice until they landed on Cindy. Phina, who acts as the Secretary of the association says she openly campaigned for Cindy to win the position, putting behind her ill feelings for her considering their past.
“I forgot about everything. I forgave her for real but we have never talked about it. I campaigned for her and left everyone surprised about how I could do that. And she won,” she said.
The pair is now in a better place and surprisingly Phina Mugerwa was part of the organizing committee of Cindy’s baby shower in 2023.
Fortunately, Phina Mugerwa found peace and solace in her Muzungu lover, and in 2023 the couple held a colorful introduction ceremony to cement their relationship.
