Singer Maureen Nantume has opened up on her journey that saw her rise from being a house help to one of the best female band artists running the music industry.
In a heartfelt exclusive interview, Maureen Nantume narrated that her life journey started way back in 2000 while doing her house help job in Najjanankumbi.
She attended that year’s edition of the ‘Nkuuka Festival’ where top Eagles Production management announced that they would hold auditions seeking young artists, dancers, and actors to join their band.
Nantume was lucky to be selected, officially kickstarting her music career but she did not get the big breakthrough that she had dreamed of immediately.
In 2004, she released her very first studio project ‘Sili Ndogoyi’ but did not get the chance to step on stage because of the many talented artists that were above her.
She had to put in the extra work behind the scenes for her to get the spotlight and finally, in 2006, she got her big breakthrough when the song went viral.

Nantume narrates that ‘Sili Ndogoyi’ was inspired by her real-life experiences and it addressed the domestic violence she endured before summoning the courage to leave the abusive marriage.
In the interview, she confessed that every time she watches the song visuals, she wonders how she got the courage to hit the stage or even stand before cameras in a very miserable state that she was in at that time.
The song became popular, garnering Nantume several fans across the country, and in 2009, she held her very first concert at Club Obligato.
Despite having only a catalog of five songs, Nantume’s concert was a total sellout with many music lovers flocking to the venue to watch her perform.
“People loved all my five songs and I had garnered a lot of fans because I filled the entire Club Obligato and luckily after performing, they gave me a lot of money that I had never held in my life,” she said as she credited Mesach Ssemakula for being the driving force behind her success.
